Traditionally, Product Design requires
preparation of physical models of the product as an aid for analysis of
different aspects of design. The factors that were used to analyze includes
forces, stresses, deflections, assembly of different parts of the product etc.
Introduction of computers has eliminated the physical models of the product during the design phase. Various design aspects that includes the structural analysis and assembly of parts can be done by the computer drafted models. The term of Computer Aided Engineering is used for the product design that involves computers in design and analysis of product. Computer Aided Engineering is a broad term that is used to represent Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Analysis (CAA), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and other Computer Aided tasks required for Product Design Cycle.
Computer Aided Engineering has made it possible to reduce the cost of the design process to a great amount by eliminating the requirement of prototyping at earlier stages of the design. Design Software is used to develop the 3-Dimensional model of the product. After 3-Dimensional modeling the model is exported to a Computer Analysis Software. Various design specifications and product functionalities are analyzed using computers. The structural analysis software can predict the structural strength of the product under the expected loading conditions. The aerodynamic analysis software helps in optimization of the shape of the product during early design phase. In short, there is software that is made to check each and every aspect of the product to some extent. After the design analysis the type of manufacturing technique to be used, the material blanks required and the production planning can also be sorted out using the computer software.
